HOW TO SAFELY LOAD CARGO INTO CONTAINERS?

Container loading plays a critical role in ensuring cargo safety in Full Container Load (FCL) shipments. With this transport mode, cargo typically undergoes a long and multi-stage journey, including inland trucking, ocean freight, container circulation and storage at port yards, as well as loading and unloading operations. Any negligence during the container loading process may expose shippers to significant risks upon cargo arrival, such as cargo damage, cargo shifting and collapsing toward the container door – posing serious safety hazards when opening the container or even container damage that results in unnecessary additional costs. Therefore, proper and methodical container loading in accordance with standard practices is essential to ensure cargo safety throughout the transportation process. In the article below, join Nhat Long Logistics as we share practical guidelines for loading cargo into containers correctly and safely.

Container Inspection Before Loading

Before proceeding with container loading, the following inspections should be carefully carried out:

  • External container inspection: Ensure the container is free from dents, deformation, or excessive wear, as these conditions may compromise cargo integrity during transit. The container exterior must be clean, dry, and free from odors.
  • Internal container inspection: Thoroughly check for water tightness by closing the container doors from inside and observing any light penetration to detect cracks or holes. Inspect rivets and fasteners for damage, and carefully examine interior linings and fittings, including ventilation openings and refrigeration ducts (if applicable).
  • Container door inspection: Verify that the doors and locking mechanisms operate smoothly and securely. Container doors must be tightly sealed to prevent water ingress during transportation.
  • Technical specifications check: Review the container’s maximum payload, internal capacity, tare weight, and other technical parameters. Non-compliance with these specifications may not only affect cargo safety but also lead to inspections, penalties, or delays imposed by authorities during transit.

Cargo Segregation Inside the Container

The following types of cargo must not be loaded together in the same container:

  • Dust-emitting cargo and dust-sensitive cargo
  • Odorous cargo and odor-sensitive cargo
  • Moisture-generating cargo and moisture-sensitive cargo
  • Wet cargo and dry cargo
  • Heavy cargo placed on top of lighter cargo

In cases where incompatible cargo types must be loaded in the same container, they should be clearly segregated and separated by partitions. However, mixed loading should be minimized, as container movement during transit may cause cargo shifting, leading to contact, contamination, or damage.

Proper Weight Distribution

Improper weight distribution may result in serious safety incidents such as vehicle rollover on slopes, loss of balance during lifting operations, or structural stress to the container.

For this reason, cargo weight must be evenly distributed throughout the container. During loading, cargo should be arranged evenly from the front to the container doors. When loading mixed cargo with varying weights, heavy cargo should be placed at the bottom and lighter cargo on top. This practice helps reduce pressure on individual packages while maintaining stability throughout the transportation process.

Cargo Securing and Blocking & Bracing Inside the Container

Proper cargo blocking, bracing, and securing are essential steps to ensure safe delivery to the consignee. For partially loaded containers or shipments with separated cargo units, adequate dunnage and lashing must be applied to prevent cargo shifting, collapse, or impact that could compromise cargo quality.

Various securing methods and materials may be used, including wooden blocks, padding mats, tarpaulins, ropes, straps, and air bags. However, relying on untrained experience without proper technical knowledge may cause cargo damage and result in increased costs and delays for both individuals and businesses.

Therefore, choosing a reputable and experienced logistics partner with expertise in professional container loading and cargo securing techniques is key to maximizing efficiency while safeguarding cargo across the entire supply chain.
